Lewis, Paul

Paul is a native of Beverly, WV. A graduate of Beverly High School, he received his BS degree in agriculture from Berea College in 1966. He received his MS in reproductive Physiology from WVU in 1968 and entered the US Army. In 1970 he returned to WVU and earned his Doctorate in Reproductive Physiology in 1973 when he accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Lincoln University in Missouri with responsibilities in teaching and research. In 1978 he returned to WVU as the Animal Scientist on the WVU Allegheny Highlands Project (AHP). With the closure of the AHP project he moved to Morgantown as a faculty member in the Division of the Animal and Veterinary Sciences with continued responsibilities in teaching, including academic advising of undergraduate and graduate students within the division, and research. He was promoted to professor in 1985 and was name Director of the Division in 1988-1993. During his tenure at WVU he had assigned responsibilities in teaching, research and extension. He served a second term as Division Director from 2001-2010 when he accepted the position of Assistant Director for Outreach and Community Affair within the Davis College Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station. His research focus has been to study factors that improve reproductive efficiency in cattle and sheep conducting both basic and applied research trials. He has served as the principle or co-investigator on over $5 million in externally funded grants, authored or co-authored over 50 refereed manuscripts and has served as the major advisor to more than 20 Master’s and Doctoral level graduate students. Honors include induction into the WVU Phi Kappa Phi and Mountain Honoraries, WV State Dairy Show Honoree, 1983; Certificate of Merit to the West Virginia Beef Industry, 1985 & 2004; Gamma Sigma Delta Senior Faculty Merit Award, 1996; WVU Heebink Service Award, 2002; Outstanding Alumnus of the Davis College, 2006; Induction into West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame, 2006.
